Kalaburagi: Police constable allegedly sets SI’s car on fire after FIR, flees station

Kalaburagi, Sep 16, 2026: A police constable allegedly set fire to the sub-inspector’s car and fled from Mahagaon police station after an FIR was registered against him, police said.

The accused has been identified as Rajashekar Varanal, who is currently posted at Chincholi police station. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Varanal had earlier served at Mahagaon police station for nearly four years. He was reportedly in a relationship with a woman from Mahagaon Cross.

Following a complaint by the woman’s relatives, he was transferred to Chincholi police station. However, he allegedly continued to stay at Mahagaon Cross, citing his children’s education.

According to the complaint, Varanal allegedly assaulted the woman on the road and later broke into her house. On September 13, he allegedly set fire to some materials at the house and demanded the return of Rs 10 lakh in cash and gold that he claimed to have given her.

The woman subsequently filed a complaint at Mahagaon police station. Following the registration of an FIR, Varanal allegedly set the SI’s car on fire and fled the station.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
