Jammu and Kashmir strictly internal to Us: India blasts Pakistan’s unwarranted remarks at UN

New Delhi, Jun 24, 2026: India on Tuesday firmly rejected Pakistan’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir during an Arria-formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, accusing Islamabad of politicising the forum and reiterating New Delhi’s position that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter.

Harish made the remarks while delivering India’s statement at the meeting titled ‘Bridging the Implementation Gap: UNSC Resolutions and Maintenance of International Peace and Security’.

Responding to comments made by Pakistan’s representative during the discussion, Harish strongly criticised what he described as an attempt to introduce political issues into a forum focused on the implementation of Security Council resolutions.

“I also refer to the unwarranted remarks made by the representative of Pakistan," Harish said during his intervention.

The Indian envoy further questioned the conduct of the meeting’s co-chair, saying, “It is incredible that a co-chair expected to be balanced and unbiased in conduct has chosen to politicise this forum."

The remarks came as India and Pakistan once again exchanged differing positions over Jammu and Kashmir at the UN platform, with New Delhi maintaining that the issue does not fall within the ambit of international discussion.

Reaffirming India’s longstanding stance on the issue, Harish said the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir remains a matter that concerns India alone.

“I would only like to stress for brevity of time that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a matter strictly internal to India," he said.

Emphasising the continuity of India’s position, Harish added, “It always has been, is, and will remain so."

Harish’s response came at the conclusion of his statement at the Arria-formula meeting of the Security Council, an informal and flexible format used by UNSC members to discuss issues related to international peace and security.

According to ANI, the Indian envoy had primarily addressed the theme of the meeting, highlighting the distinction between Chapters VI and VII of the UN Charter and arguing that mediation frameworks created under Chapter VI should not be viewed as permanently applicable.

He said such mechanisms are designed to respond to prevailing circumstances and should be reviewed in line with changing realities.

Harish also argued that there is a case for reviewing outdated mediation frameworks and suggested that Security Council mandates should not remain outside broader UN efforts aimed at improving efficiency.

However, he reserved his concluding remarks to respond to Pakistan’s intervention, describing the comments as “unwarranted" and reiterating India’s position on Jammu and Kashmir.
