Indore, January 2, 2026: Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava on Friday said he had received information about 10 deaths linked to a diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area of the city.

However, local residents alleged that the death toll stands at 14, including a six-month-old infant. The health department has not confirmed these claims.

“According to health department records, four people have died due to the diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura. However, I have received information about 10 deaths related to this outbreak,” Bhargava told PTI.

Responding to queries about a possible cholera outbreak, following preliminary test reports of drinking water samples from the area, the mayor said only the health department could provide official details.

Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said on Thursday that laboratory tests conducted by a city medical college confirmed contamination of drinking water due to a pipeline leakage. However, he did not disclose detailed findings, while administrative officials have also refrained from giving clear information.

Officials said the leakage was detected in the main drinking water supply pipeline near a police outpost in Bhagirathpura, at a location where a toilet had been constructed. The leakage is believed to have led to the contamination.

Over the past nine days, more than 1,400 people in Bhagirathpura have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea. According to health department officials, as of Thursday night, 272 patients had been hospitalised, of whom 71 were discharged.

Of the 201 patients currently undergoing treatment, 32 are admitted to intensive care units, officials said.
