Burnaby (Canada), Jan 25, 2026: Police in Burnaby, British Columbia, are investigating the targeted killing of a 28-year-old Indian-origin man, which they believe may be linked to an ongoing gang conflict in the province.

The victim has been identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, a Vancouver resident. Burnaby RCMP said Gill was known to police and that preliminary findings indicate the shooting had a nexus to the B.C. gang war.

According to police, frontline officers responded to reports of shots fired near the 3700 block of Canada Way shortly before 5.30 pm on January 22, 2026. On arrival, officers found Gill with critical injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, police located a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators later confirmed that the burned vehicle was connected to the homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the probe and is working in coordination with the Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the B.C. Coroners Service to collect evidence and advance the investigation.

Sergeant Freda Fong said the shooting in a public place was deeply concerning for both police and the community. She emphasized that information from witnesses and people in the area would be crucial in identifying those responsible and ensuring accountability.

Police have appealed to the public for assistance and are seeking witnesses, as well as dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident, to help identify the suspects.
