New Delhi, Mar 9, 2026: India supports peace and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, and is urging de-escalation, restraint, and the protection of civilians, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Monday regarding the widening conflict in West Asia.
Making a suo motu statement in the Rajya Sabha, he said the well-being and security of the Indian community in the region remains the government’s top priority.
The Parliament Budget Session began on Monday on a stormy note amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Jaishankar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “closely monitoring” the developments in the region.
“Every effort is being made to bring back Indians stranded in West Asia,” Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha.
Amid loud slogans from the Opposition in the House, he noted that the situation in West Asia is a matter of deep concern.
“We continue to believe that dialogue and discussion should be used to resolve all issues,” he said.
He added that the government has been continuously assessing the situation since the conflict began. Jaishankar also mentioned that maintaining leadership-level contacts with Iran has been difficult at the moment, though he confirmed that he has spoken with the Iranian foreign minister.
