India, Uzbekistan to Establish Long-Term Uranium Supply Arrangement

New Delhi, Aug 30, 2026: India and Uzbekistan will establish a long-term arrangement for uranium supplies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday following his meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent.

The agreement is expected to support India’s long-term nuclear energy programme by ensuring a stable supply of uranium. Modi described the arrangement as a key outcome of his talks with the Uzbek president.

The two countries are also finalising three sister-city and sister-state agreements. Modi called for a clear roadmap to ensure the partnerships translate into concrete projects.

Urban development was another focus of the discussions, with Modi highlighting Gujarat’s GIFT City as a model for Uzbekistan’s New Tashkent project. He invited an Uzbek delegation to study the planning and implementation of GIFT City.

Meanwhile, Mirziyoyev said bilateral trade crossed $1 billion for the first time last year, while the number of joint ventures between the two countries has increased sevenfold in recent years. Direct air connectivity has also expanded to 14 flights a week.

In a major boost to people-to-people ties, Uzbekistan is set to waive visa requirements for Indian citizens for stays of up to 30 days. The move is expected to encourage tourism, business travel and cultural exchanges.

India and Uzbekistan already cooperate in areas including trade, investment, education, pharmaceuticals, IT and culture. The latest initiatives add nuclear energy and urban development to the expanding bilateral partnership.
