Illicit liquor kills 13, gets several others hospitalised in Pune

Mumbai, May 29, 2026: At least 13 people died and several others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Pune, officials said on Friday.

The deaths were reported from areas under the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporation limits over the past 24 hours.

According to reports, the liquor was allegedly brewed and supplied by Yogesh Wankhede, a resident of Pune.

The State Excise Department along with the police commissionerates of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have launched an investigation into the incident.

“Prima facie, it appears that seven people died due to consumption of spurious liquor in the Phugewadi area,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Atole said. He added that post-mortem and forensic reports are awaited.
