New Delhi, Nov 1, 2026: Leaders of the Opposition INDIA bloc, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, M.A. Baby and Tejashwi Yadav, gathered at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Sunday for a major protest against the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.

The ’Chalo Delhi’ rally is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the gathering.

Massive Protest in Delhi

Congress workers from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana, along with supporters of the Samajwadi Party, RJD and Left parties, have mobilised for the protest.

Meanwhile, the BJP organised counter-marches in the capital, invoking the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to target the Congress. Union Minister J.P. Nadda dismissed the Opposition rally as political drama, accusing the parties of attempting to create unrest and undermine democracy.

The protest follows an Opposition meeting on Saturday, during which Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge moved a symbolic resolution listing six allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner, including voter deletions, changes to Form 6 and alleged manipulation of electoral processes. The Election Commission has been at the centre of the Opposition’s criticism over the SIR exercise.

The rally has also raised concerns among traders in central Delhi, who fear that traffic restrictions and congestion during the festival season could affect business.

Nearly 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across central and New Delhi, with around 4,000 stationed at Ramlila Maidan and along the route from Minto Bridge. Multi-layered barricades and CCTV surveillance have been put in place around Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations.

Traffic restrictions and diversions are in force in parts of central Delhi from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with commuters advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

Police said 200 to 250 CCTV cameras were monitoring the area and security arrangements had been coordinated with the rally organisers.
