New Delhi, Oct 30, 2026: Intensifying its campaign seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the opposition I.N.D.I.A. bloc will hold a symbolic ’public impeachment’ on Friday, with former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presiding over the proceedings, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge moving the ’motion’ and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivering the concluding remarks.
Invitations have been sent to MPs of the opposition alliance for the event, titled ’The Public Impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar’, scheduled to begin at 3.30 pm at 10, Rajaji Marg, Kharge’s official residence in New Delhi.
Opposition leaders met on Thursday to finalise the proceedings, which are being organised as a symbolic protest over the alleged ’vote chori’ issue.
Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal, senior Congress leader Meira Kumar, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, Samajwadi Party’s Harendra Malik, JMM’s Mahua Maji and CPI(M)’s John Brittas were among those who attended the preparatory meeting.
Apart from Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, one representative from each opposition party is expected to address the gathering.
Earlier this week, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the CEC of violating the Constitution and undermining the country’s electoral democracy.
"The CEC has demonstrably violated the letter and spirit of the Constitution. He has systematically subverted the very foundations of our electoral democracy. He has, to put it bluntly, lied to the Supreme Court," Ramesh had alleged.
He also made a sharp political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Congress on Tuesday claimed it had been denied permission to organise the ’public impeachment’ and accused the government of attempting to silence public voices after allegedly undermining the electoral system.
The Congress and other opposition parties have been demanding Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Following Friday’s event, the opposition alliance will organise a ’Chalo Dilli March’ against alleged ’vote chori’ on Sunday, November 1, culminating in a rally at Ramlila Maidan.
Rahul Gandhi on Thursday appealed to people, including student groups irrespective of their political affiliations, to participate in the march. He described it as a movement to "save democracy", end alleged vote theft and protect the Constitution.
