"The police are currently verifying the suspect’s background, as he appears to be mentally disturbed and depressed," said Vikram Amathe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing the accused wearing a helmet and gripping the woman by her neck. He was also seen attempting to push her into an autorickshaw before passersby intervened and subdued him.

The incident occurred between 11.45 am and 12.15 pm on October 31 at Premium Shoe and Bag Repair Shop on 100 Feet Road, where the victim, Jayashree S, worked.

According to the FIR, the accused barged into the shop, jumped over the reception counter and claimed that someone was coming to kill him. He allegedly warned Jayashree against shouting. He was wearing a helmet and gloves at the time.

The accused then covered her mouth, threatened her with a knife and allegedly attempted to glue her hands to the desk. He also stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth and snatched her 35-gram gold mangalsutra, valued at Rs 4.50 lakh.

The victim further alleged that the accused pulled her hair, held a knife to her throat, threatened members of the public with the weapon and attacked the shop owner when he came to her rescue.

"Acting swiftly with the help of the public, the police secured the suspect, conducted a thorough interrogation, and sent him to judicial custody. The victim is safe and uninjured," the DCP said.

However, the FIR stated that Jayashree sustained minor injuries to her neck and hands during the struggle.

The accused has been booked under Section 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for robbery. Further investigation is underway.
