New Delhi, Oct 6, 2026: Opposition MPs led by Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protest march began from the Parliament complex around 11 am as scheduled. However, security personnel stopped the protesters near Akashvani Bhawan, around 300 metres from the Election Commission office.
Security arrangements had been strengthened around the ECI headquarters and other sensitive locations to regulate movement and prevent any untoward incident.
The heightened security came amid protest calls by several organisations and opposition parties over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
The INDIA bloc had announced that its opposition MPs would march to the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday. Its leaders are also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu to raise their concerns over the SIR exercise.
The protest call followed a meeting of 19 opposition parties held on September 30.
Opposition parties have criticised the Election Commission over the conduct of the SIR exercise. The poll panel, however, has rejected allegations of differences within its three-member body and maintained that decisions relating to the exercise were taken unanimously.
