Bengaluru, April 5, 2026: The Karnataka Governor has called for a comprehensive review of concerns over the state government’s decision to award only grades, without marks, for the third language in the SSLC examination.

In a communication to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Secretary to the Governor R Prabhu Shankar forwarded a representation from the Association for Preservation of Local Languages, Bengaluru, highlighting potential implications of the policy on students, teachers and the education system.

Third Language in SSLC

The representation stressed the role of the third language in promoting linguistic diversity and intellectual development, warning that a grading-only system could reduce the subject’s academic importance and affect student engagement.

It also reflected concerns among teachers, parents and educationists about the long-term impact on the quality and inclusiveness of school education.

Taking note of the issues, the Governor has directed that the matter be examined in detail, considering academic and administrative aspects. The Chief Secretary has been asked to review the issue in consultation with the Department of School Education and other stakeholders and take appropriate action in the interest of students and the state’s educational objectives.
