Food Safety Raids in Bengaluru Hotels Raise Hygiene Concerns

Bengaluru, August 9, 2026: Food safety raids at 26 three-star and five-star hotels in Bengaluru have raised concerns over hygiene and food storage practices after officials reportedly found expired milk, spoiled meat, old bakery products and fungus-covered vegetables.

The raids were conducted by 30 teams of the Food Safety Department. Officials also found meat stored without proper labelling and vegetarian and non-vegetarian items kept together in refrigerators.

At The Lalit Ashok (Annex South), officials seized 76 kg of meat and 200 kg of vegetables and destroyed 32 litres of expired milk. Shangri-La Bengaluru had 15 kg of meat seized, while 19 kg was confiscated from Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru.

At Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield, 3 kg of bakery products were destroyed, while 72 kg of meat and fish was seized from Taj Yeshwantpur.

Radisson Blu (The Atrium) was found with 50 kg of expired chicken, 25 kg of meat, 23 kg of fish and 7 kg of vegetables, all of which were seized.

Several other products, including tea, oil, chilli and turmeric powders, tomato sauce, lemon juice, cheese, papad, cashews, garlic and black pepper powder, were sent for laboratory testing.

The findings have renewed concerns over food safety in the hospitality sector, particularly at hotels where customers pay premium prices expecting high standards of hygiene.

The issue also extends beyond hotels. Recent food safety raids elsewhere in the country have reportedly uncovered adulterated paneer, ghee and milk. In Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, officials allegedly found around 2,100 kg of talcum powder at a flour mill, reportedly intended to be mixed with flour to increase its weight and improve its appearance.

The Bengaluru raids do not suggest that all luxury hotels serve unsafe food, but they have highlighted the need for stricter food safety checks and compliance across the hospitality industry and the wider food supply chain.
