Mumbai, June 9, 2025: At least five commuters were killed and few others were injured after they fell on the tracks from two suburban local trains running between the Diva and Mumbra stations of the Central Railway in the Thane district, which neighbours Mumbai, on Monday.
A Central Railway spokesperson said that according to initial reports, more than a dozen fell down from running locals.
Locals and eyewitnesses reported that more than a dozen people fell down from the trains.
The victims were rushed to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital at Kalwa.
While local reports said that at least five persons died in the accident, the Central Railway, however, said that they would be able to confirm only when authentic details are available from the Thane district authorities.
The incident took place around 0930 hrs, railway and police authorities said.
“The victims were those who were travelling on footboards.
People travelling on the footboard on a local train from Kasara and similarly those on a train going towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, collided with each other and fell,” a Central Railway spokesperson said.
Generally there is a gap of one-and-a-half to two meters between two suburban local tracks. “Passengers were travelling on the footboard and had their backpacks. Perhaps these may have brushed against each other and the mishap took place,” the spokesperson said.
“The first information given by the guard of the Kasara-bound local train was that six passengers were seen lying injured on the down-through track. Once the ambulances reached the spot, we found out that there were eight passengers,” the spokesperson added.
“The incident that has happened in Mumbra, this is not a train accident, it is only an incident where 13 persons got injured, eight of them were admitted to hospital in Kalwa, other five were admitted to civil hospital, they are getting treated, we are hoping for their recovery,” the spokesperson said.
The Railway has ordered a probe into the accident.
The accident took place off a curve - where the trains travel at a speed of around 100 kmph.
"It is very unfortunate that a total of 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families. The injured have been immediately admitted to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital and are undergoing treatment. The local administration is coordinating. I pray to God that the injured get relief soon,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
“The deaths of railway passengers have highlighted the need to pay more serious attention to the issue of overcrowding and passenger safety on suburban railway lines. I am confident that the railway administration will take concrete steps at the earliest to make the suburban railway service more effective and safe. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured passengers in the accident,” Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar said.
"It is a very unfortunate incident. We stand with the families," said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is the guardian minister of Thane district.
The Shiv Sena (UBT), meanwhile, has demanded the resignation of the Railway Minister.
