Fire breaks out in south Delhi restaurant, foreigners among 21 killed

New Delhi, Jun 3, 2026: A devastating fire at a bed-and-breakfast hotel in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday claimed 21 lives and left several others injured. Officials said many of the victims were foreign nationals, primarily from Central Asian and African countries.

Initial reports suggested that the blaze broke out at the Lemon Green Restaurant around 8.45 a.m. However, police later clarified that the fire had actually originated at the Flourish Stay B&B located in Hauz Rani, a densely populated locality within the Malviya Nagar area.

More than 40 people were rescued from the building and rushed to nearby hospitals. Of them, 21 were declared dead on arrival. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as several injured persons remain in critical condition.



The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation is underway.

PM Announces Ex-Gratia, Condoles Loss of Lives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims and their families.

"The loss of lives due to a fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi is tragic. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, Max Hospital in Saket reported that it received 39 patients following the fire. According to the hospital, 18 people were brought dead, while 15 others were admitted to the intensive care unit.

A hospital statement said the patients suffered from asphyxiation, minor burn injuries and fractures. Officials reiterated that the toll may increase as several victims remain in a critical condition.
