Delhi on high alert, heavy security as CJP pushes Chalo Sansad march despite no police nod

New Delhi, Jul 20, 2026: The national capital has been placed on high alert ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, with Delhi Police mounting an extensive security operation as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) prepares to go ahead with its proposed ‘Chalo Sansad’ march despite not receiving police permission.
Heavy deployment of police personnel, multi-layered barricades, intensified vehicle checks and heightened surveillance have transformed several parts of central Delhi into high-security zones.
Authorities have made it clear that no permission has been sought or granted for the proposed march towards Parliament and warned of strict legal action against those violating prohibitory orders.
The CJP has called for the march to protest alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
‘NO PERMISSION HAS BEEN SOUGHT OR GRANTED’
In a public advisory posted on X, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said Delhi Police had neither received nor approved any request for the proposed procession.
“Delhi Police categorically clarifies that no permission has been sought or granted for any such protest march/procession," Sharma said.
The advisory noted that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which replaced Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), remain in force across the New Delhi district.
According to the police, protest marches, demonstrations, processions and assemblies are prohibited except at the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar with prior permission.
The DCP also warned that anyone violating the prohibitory orders could face prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws.
“Delhi Police appeals to all citizens to respect the law, refrain from participating in any unauthorised gathering or march, and cooperate in maintaining public peace, safety and security," Sharma said.
HEAVY DEPLOYMENT, BARRICADES AND THREE-TIER SECURITY
Security has been significantly strengthened across Parliament Street, Central Vista, Connaught Place, Shankar Chowk and other sensitive locations ahead of the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
According to police officials, additional personnel have been deployed while multi-layered barricades have been erected at key entry points leading to Parliament.
Every vehicle entering the New Delhi district is being subjected to intensive security checks, with additional pickets set up at strategic locations.
Reserve police forces and rapid response teams have also been kept on standby to deal with any contingency, while CCTV surveillance has been intensified across sensitive areas.
A three-tier security arrangement has been put in place around Jantar Mantar, where the CJP has been staging its protest.
According to police sources, two layers of Delhi Police personnel and one layer of paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure law and order.
Officials said preventive deployment will continue throughout the Parliament session.
As security arrangements intensified ahead of the proposed Parliament march, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the closure of several metro stations until further notice due to security reasons.
Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth metro stations were closed till further instructions, it was known.
CJP CONTINUES TO PREPARE FOR MARCH
Even as Delhi Police reiterated that the proposed procession lacks official approval, the CJP continues to prepare for its planned march to Parliament.
Sources told ANI that the organisation has not formally approached Delhi Police seeking permission for the demonstration.
They added that even if an application is submitted now, approval is unlikely due to the stringent security arrangements in place during the Parliament session.
Police have maintained that they are determined not to allow any unauthorised march into the high-security Parliament zone.
SONAM WANGCHUK REMAINS IN HOSPITAL
The developments come a day after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had earlier announced the July 20 ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital following a deterioration in his health during his indefinite hunger strike.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), a medical team had reached Jantar Mantar on Saturday to conduct a routine, court-directed daily health assessment. However, the examination was briefly disrupted after some demonstrators allegedly obstructed the process.
Despite being hospitalised, Wangchuk urged supporters to participate in Monday’s proposed march.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament begins on July 20 and is scheduled to continue until August 13, with security expected to remain on high alert throughout the session.
