Mysuru, Oct 5, 2026: Abhimanyu, the jumbo chosen to lead this year’s Mysuru Dasara procession as the Nishane Ane (ceremonial lead elephant), received a warm welcome at the Mysuru Palace on Monday. His fans presented him with the traditional ‘Mysuru Peta’, which was placed on his head during the reception.
Special pujas were performed for Abhimanyu, who carried the golden howdah during last year’s Nada Habba Dasara. He was also offered floral tributes and welcomed at the Jayamarthanda Gate entrance to the Palace.
Abhimanyu enjoys a large following for his majestic gait, calm demeanour and composure during the Jamboo Savari, when he carries the 750-kg golden howdah amid thousands of spectators eager to catch a glimpse of Goddess Chamundeshwari.
His fans specially crafted a ‘Mysuru Peta’ measuring 166 inches in circumference and weighing 8 kg. Abhimanyu was adorned with the ceremonial headgear before being brought into the Palace premises.
Associated with the Dasara festivities for nearly 25 years, Abhimanyu carried the golden howdah for six consecutive years from 2020 to 2025. He was initially relieved of Dasara duties this year after turning 60 in April, with the Forest Department excluding him from the list of selected elephants in accordance with Supreme Court directives.
However, following demands from the public and several organisations for a grand ceremonial farewell, the government approved his participation for one final appearance. Abhimanyu will lead the Dasara procession as the Nishane Ane this year.
