Covid third wave may never come if we take strong measures, implement them well: Govt

New Delhi, May 07, 2021:       It’s possible that India may not see a third wave of coronavirus infections, but for that to happen, we will have to take strong measures and implement them effectively on ground, the government said on Friday.

 

Addressing a press briefing of the Union health ministry, Dr K VijayRaghavan, government’s principal scientific advisor said, "If we take strong measures, the third wave may not happen in all the places or indeed anywhere at all. It depends much on how effectively the guidelines are implemented at the local level, in the states, in districts and in the cities everywhere."

Dr K VijayRaghavan’s comments come just two after he, in a similar press briefing, said it is "inevitable" that India will be hit by a third wave.

He had said while a third wave is inevitable, its timing and scale can’t be predicted at present.
"In the wake of the changing nature of variants, we must be ready for the third wave We can’t predict the timing, but it seems inevitable. We must prepare ourselves and be ready for it," he had said.Meanwhile, the Union health ministry on Friday said there are 12 states that have more than 1 lakh active Covid-19 cases at present, and in seven states, the active cases range between 50,000 and 1 lakh.

The positivity rate is currently above 15 per cent in 24 states in the country and in the range of 5-15 per cent in nine, the ministry said.

It added that Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh are among states/UTs showing a continued plateauing or decrease in daily new Covid-19 cases. But, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odisha are among those showing an upward trend in daily new cases.
