Chennai, May 6, 2026: In a key move shaping its post-poll strategy in Tamil Nadu, the Indian National Congress is reported to have passed a resolution to extend conditional support to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which has emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Assembly with 108 seats.

According to a report by India Today, the decision was taken during a virtual meeting held to deliberate on a possible alliance with TVK. The Congress, which secured five seats in the 2026 Assembly election, is likely to seek two Cabinet berths along with chairmanships of select government boards as part of the arrangement.

A Press Trust of India report added that AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu affairs, Girish Chodankar, convened the meeting to decide on extending support to TVK.

Earlier, the party’s central leadership had authorised its Tamil Nadu unit to take a call based on the public mandate and prevailing political sentiment.

A formal letter backing TVK is expected to be issued on Wednesday, the report said. Following this, Congress legislators are likely to meet Vijay at Panaiyur, the current hub of TVK’s political activity.

With TVK falling short of the halfway mark, it requires the support of at least 10 MLAs to form a government with a simple majority.

The Congress has won five seats, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi has secured four. The Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have won two seats each. The outgoing ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has bagged 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won 47.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured one seat, as have the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam, while the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi has won two seats.

The Congress had contested the Assembly elections in a pre-poll alliance with the DMK, while the BJP was aligned with the AIADMK.
