The 76-year-old writer is known for work that moves between poetry, prose, classical literature and translation. Her writing often draws on ancient Greek literature while exploring contemporary themes.

Carson’s best-known works include Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband and Wrong Norma. She has also translated works from ancient Greek, including texts by Sappho and Euripides.

Carson has received several major literary honours during her career and has taught classics and literature at universities including McGill, Princeton and the University of California, Berkeley.

Carson produced some of her most notable works during the 1990s, a period that helped establish her distinctive place in the international literary world.

Among her works from the decade was ‘The Glass Essay’, published in Glass, Irony, and God in 1995. The work is known for blurring the boundaries between genres and showing Carson’s ability to move freely between different forms of writing.

Another major work followed in 1998 with Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, which has often been described as one of Carson’s greatest literary achievements.

Across her writing career, Carson has explored what literature can be and how writing can evolve beyond conventional forms. The Nobel Prize noted that she approaches writing with a light touch, while the literary process itself has become central to her artistic work.

Carson’s work has also extended beyond traditional literary forms. She has collaborated with visual artists, choreographers, opera directors and theatre directors, reflecting her openness to different artistic disciplines.

Her collaborations demonstrate the freedom with which she approaches literary conventions and established rules. Her work since the 1990s has consequently had a lasting influence on the international art and literature scene.
