Bengaluru: Rs 9-crore cash found in car; Income Tax dept launches probe

Bengaluru, Aug 21, 2026: A car carrying ₹9 crore in cash was intercepted by Bengaluru police on the outskirts of the city following a tip-off from the Income Tax Department, officials said on Friday.

According to police, on August 18, Jagadish, Deputy Director of Income Tax, Unit-22, Bengaluru, alerted authorities that a large amount of cash was being illegally transported in a Hyundai Creta (KL 20 T 8629) travelling from Bengaluru towards Hosur in Tamil Nadu.

Acting on the information, personnel from the Electronics City police station intercepted the vehicle near a traffic signal after the Electronics City Expressway toll plaza on Hosur Road at around 10.30 pm. The car and its two occupants were taken to the police station for further inspection.

One of the occupants was identified as Sachin, 42, who is reportedly associated with Sindhu Jewellers in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The identity of the second occupant was not immediately disclosed. Both individuals were subsequently taken into custody by Income Tax officials.

During a search of the vehicle, Income Tax officials recovered ₹9 crore in cash, mostly in ₹500 denomination notes, packed inside a suitcase. Follow-up searches at premises linked to the suspects in Tamil Nadu led to the seizure of an additional ₹1.3 crore.

The Income Tax Department has launched an investigation to determine the source and purpose of the cash. Further inquiries are underway.
