Bagalkot Bypoll: BJP, Congress candidates file nominations amid show of strength

Bagalkot, Mar 24, 2026: The bypoll race in the Bagalkot Assembly constituency intensified on Monday as BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath and Congress nominee Umesh Meti filed their nomination papers on the final day, accompanied by massive processions showcasing party strength.
Charantimath submitted his nomination in the presence of senior BJP leaders, including state president B. Y. Vijayendra, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, and MPs Jagadish Shettar, P. C. Gaddigoudar and Govind Karjol.
On the other hand, Umesh Meti filed his papers before the district election officer in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, and ministers Satish Jarkiholi, Shivanand Patil and R. B. Timmapur.
The byelection was necessitated following the demise of sitting Congress MLA H. Y. Meti.
War of words heats up
Addressing a public rally, Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that the Congress would retain the seat, launching a sharp attack on the BJP. He accused the party of failing to fulfil its 2018 manifesto promises and termed it “anti-poor, anti-backward classes and anti-Dalits.” He asserted that Congress alone could ensure social justice and highlighted the party’s welfare guarantees.
Echoing similar sentiments, Shivakumar described the byelection as a contest between “dharma and adharma.”
Meanwhile, Vijayendra alleged that the Congress uses money power during elections, claiming that leaders camp in constituencies and distribute cash to influence voters. He urged the electorate not to fall prey to such tactics, adding that the bypoll would serve as a precursor to the 2028 Assembly elections.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also expressed confidence in a BJP victory, stating that the party would put up a united effort this time after losing previously due to internal differences.
With high-profile campaigning from both sides, the Bagalkot bypoll is shaping up to be a closely watched political contest.
