Bengaluru, September 14, 2025: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s remarks linking religious conversions to caste-based inequality in Hindu society have triggered a sharp response from the BJP.
Speaking to reporters on Friday about the caste census, Siddaramaiah said: “Even if we say don’t convert, some do so because of the system. In our Hindu community, if there was equality and equal opportunities, why would anyone convert? Did we bring untouchability?” He added that inequality exists in all religions and conversion was an individual right.
Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka lashed out, questioning Siddaramaiah’s silence on Islam. “If there is equality in Islam, why are women not allowed in mosques? Why was there opposition to banning triple talaq? Why are non-Muslims referred to as kafirs in the Quran? Do you have the courage to ask these questions, Siddaramaiah?” Ashoka posted on X.
He further asked why, if Islam is peace-loving, terrorists in Pahalgam allegedly targeted Hindus. “Do you have the courage to question this?” he added.
