B’lore building collapse kills 80-year-old

Bangalore, Oct 29, 2014:  An 80-year-old woman was killed and  four others injured when a two storey building collapsed in Lingarajapuram, east Bangalore, on October 29, Tuesday evening. A one-month-old girl escaped unhurt.

Built of mud, the 50 year old  building was leaning dangerously and crashed within minutes of developing huge cracks, eyewitnesses said.

Jo Mary, who lived on the ground floor with her son Joseph Paul, 47, was killed in the building collapse. Joseph, who owns the building, suffered injuries.

Nirmala, 37, and her son Joseph, 12, who lived on the first floor, sustained injuries while her infant daughter emerged unscathed. Gayathri, 27, a tenant on the first floor, too suffered injuries.  There were only six people in the building.

Fire brigade, who pulled the injured out of the debris, attributed the crash to seepage of water into the basement of the building.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (K R Puram) Siddappa said all residents of the building have been accounted for and none was trapped under the debris. Rescue teams were clearing the debris till late in the night.  The BBMP has announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the next of kin of the dead and Rs 25,000 to each of the injured.
