Sydney, Dec 14, 2025: At least 12 people were killed and several others injured after two gunmen opened fire during a Jewish religious event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, Australian authorities said. New South Wales Police have declared the incident a terrorist attack.

According to police, the shooting occurred around 6.30 pm local time, when hundreds of people had gathered on the beach to mark the first night of the eight-day Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Witnesses reported hearing around 50 gunshots.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said one of the gunmen was killed in retaliatory police firing, while the second suspected shooter is in critical condition. Among those injured are police officers who responded to the attack.
In an initial post on X at around 7.47 pm local time, NSW Police said they were responding to a “developing incident” at Bondi Beach and urged people in the area to take shelter. In a subsequent update, police confirmed that 10 people had died, including a man believed to be one of the attackers.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing.” In a statement, he said police and emergency responders were on the ground working to save lives and urged the public to follow official advisories. He added that he had spoken to the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier and that authorities were working closely with state police.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the attackers opened fire indiscriminately, targeting children and elderly people. Visuals from the scene showed bystanders performing CPR on victims as emergency services rushed in.
Investigations are under way, and authorities have tightened security across Sydney following the attack.
