Nagoya, Oct 3, 2026: Mysuru golfer Pranavi Urs created history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual gold medal in golf at the Asian Games, holding on to a slender one-stroke lead in the final round. Her performance also helped India secure the women’s team silver medal.

The 23-year-old carded three birdies to recover from a triple bogey on the third hole that had wiped out her three-stroke overnight lead. She finished the final round with an even-par 70 to post a four-day total of 15-under 265, one stroke ahead of her nearest rivals.

Pranavi’s performance proved crucial to India’s team silver alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. Under the team scoring format, the best two scores are counted. India finished with a combined 14-under 546, behind gold medallists China, who posted 22-under 538.

Pranavi’s gold was India’s first in the Asian Games golf event since Shiv Kapur won the men’s individual title in 2002.

After completing her final round, Pranavi was drenched with water by fellow Indian golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar as they celebrated her historic victory.

China’s Yin Ruoning, a former world No. 1, won the silver medal, while Singapore’s Shannon Tan took bronze after carding a 68 and making a bogey on the first playoff hole.

‘Remarkable performance’

Professional Golf Tour of India CEO Amandeep Johl praised Pranavi’s performance, describing her gold medal as a proud moment for Indian golf.

“Pranavi Urs has delivered a remarkable performance at the Asian Games, and her historic gold medal is a proud moment for Indian golf. Her composure, consistency and belief throughout the competition have been truly impressive,” Johl, a former golfer, said in a statement.

He also hailed India’s women’s team silver, saying it reflected the growing strength and depth of women’s golf in the country.

“We are delighted to see Pranavi, Aditi and Diksha perform on such a prestigious stage and put Indian golf firmly in the spotlight,” he added.
