Air India Phuket-Delhi flight experiences severe turbulence, 12 injured as plane drops 300 feet

New Delhi, Aug 4, 2026: Air India on Tuesday said its flight AI2793 from Phuket to Delhi experienced severe turbulence while cruising, resulting, resulting in a momentary change in altitude. The sudden drop of 300 feet caused minor injuries to passengers and crew members.
The airlines, in a statement, said that the pilot suddenly reported a 300 feet altitude drop, likely caused by a turbulence or an updraft/downdraft.
According to a PTI report citing sources, 12 people, including passengers and crew members were injured.
The aircraft landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport where all passengers and crew disembarked. The injured have been moved to a medical facility at the airport, the airline said.
"A small number of passengers and crew members with minor injuries requiring medical assessment have been taken to a medical facility at the airport for precautionary examination and care by Air India’s airport team and medical personnel," the statement said.
Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, where the passengers were moved to said seven people were admitted to the Emergency Department immediately and were shifted for necessary investigations like CT, MRI and X-ray scans. The hospital added that the patients are being moved to the respective inpatient department.
"Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj says, "As per the latest update, 7 passengers have arrived at Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital and have been admitted to the Emergency Department (ER). All patients were immediately assessed upon arrival, and treatment was initiated without delay. Following the initial stabilization of the patients, a Code Yellow was activated to ensure a coordinated hospital response and optimal deployment of resources. After stabilization, the patients were shifted for the necessary radiological investigations (CT/MRI/X-rays, as clinically indicated) and are now being transferred to their respective inpatient rooms for continued observation and further management," the statement said.
It added that an Air India coordination team is present at the hospital and is working closely with the the hospital staff and members of the passengers’ families.
"A dedicated Air India coordination team is present at the hospital and is working closely with the clinical and administrative teams to facilitate patient care, documentation, logistics, and communication with the passengers’ families. The medical teams are currently evaluating each patient."
