9 dead, several feared trapped after building collapses in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi

Bhiwandi, Jul 31, 2026: A portion of a four-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi on Thursday night, killing at least nine people and there are fears that several people may be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are currently underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police deployed at the site.

According to initial information, a significant section of the structure gave way while work was in progress. Authorities said the building had been vacated earlier due to its weakness and structural condition, but some workers are feared to have been caught in the collapse.

The NDRF had initially rescued one woman from the rubble and shifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment. Efforts were on to locate and evacuate others who may still be trapped.

Officials are continuing search and rescue operations amid concerns that more people could be buried under the debris. Reports initially said three people had died but then as the day progressed the number reached nine.

The building was identified as the Kohinoor Apartment, according to an Indian Express report. The municipal corporation of the city had already declared it dangerous, the report noted.

“There are many such buildings in Bhiwandi that have been declared dangerous. While we are trying to rescue those trapped, I would advise people living in such buildings to vacate them immediately," the Mayor of the city, Narayan Chowdhary, was quoted saying.
