78 year old woman, on oxygen support, casts vote in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, April 26, 2024: A 78-year-old woman who was diagnosed with pneumonia on April 23 and is currently on oxygen support, cast her vote on Friday in Karnataka.

According to the details, the woman was rushed to Manipal Hospitals Jayanagar, in Bengaluru, after she complained of cough, breathlessness, and exhaustion. Her oxygen level was found to be 80 per cent (as compared to 95 per cent or higher in healthy bodies), after her medical check was done.

Later, she was diagnosed with pneumonia affecting both her lungs.

Her medication included antibiotics, oxygen therapy, inhalation, antiviral medications, and supportive care.

However, despite such serious medical conditions, the septuagenarian expressed her desire to cast her vote, as 14 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka went to polls today.

With the medical team’s assistance, the woman was transported to a polling booth in the Jayanagar constituency, where she cast her vote on a stretcher.

Meanwhile, as the voting continues, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings for heat wave-like conditions on Friday.

As per IMD data, Bengaluru’s maximum temperature on the voting day will range between 36.4 and 38.4 degrees Celsius.

An estimated 22.34 per cent turnout was reported until 11 am, with long queues seen at polling booths across the state.

In the first phase, the Congress is contesting in all 14 seats, BJP has fielded nominees in 11 and its alliance partner JD(S), which joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September last year, in three -- Hassan, Mandya and Kolar.
