5.2-magnitude quake jolts Manipur, Meghalaya; no casualty so far

Imphal/Shillong, Apr 21, 2026: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Manipur early Tuesday morning, sending tremors across parts of the Northeast, including Meghalaya and Assam.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 5:59 am, with its epicentre in Kamjong district of Manipur at a depth of about 62 km beneath the surface.

Tremors were felt in several areas, including Imphal, Ukhrul, and parts of Meghalaya, causing brief panic among residents who rushed out of their homes.

Officials confirmed that no casualties or major damage have been reported so far.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised people to remain alert, although no aftershocks of significance have been reported yet.

The northeastern region of India is considered seismically active, and such moderate-intensity earthquakes are not uncommon.
