Thumbay Hospital Fujairah reports positive outcome from awake lumbar spine fusion for sciatica

Fujairah, Sep 29, 2026: Thumbay Hospital Fujairah has reported a positive outcome following an Awake Lumbar Spine Fusion procedure performed on a patient suffering from sciatica, highlighting its advanced spine and pain-care services.

The procedure was performed by Dr Hillol Kanti Pal, Consultant Neurosurgeon, with the support of Dr Azharuddin Mohammad and Dr Ravindra Reddy, Specialists in Anesthesiology, along with the hospital’s Operation Theatre team.

Awake Lumbar Spine Fusion is performed in appropriately selected patients while they remain awake or under carefully controlled sedation. According to the hospital, maintaining communication with the patient during key stages of the procedure can provide additional clinical feedback and complement conventional intraoperative neuromonitoring.

Dr Pal said the hospital follows a structured approach to managing sciatica, combining clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging and targeted pain-management procedures. For patients who do not obtain adequate relief through conservative or appropriate interventional treatment, minimally invasive decompression and fusion may be considered when structural spinal pathology is identified.

“Awake Spine Fusion surgery in carefully selected cases represents a safe surgical option, as the patient can provide real-time feedback during the procedure, complementing information obtained through intraoperative neuromonitoring,” Dr Pal said.

He added that the use of two C-arm fluoroscopy machines at Thumbay Hospital Fujairah helps reduce operative time and the requirement for anaesthesia drugs while facilitating patient cooperation during the procedure.
