India decides no boarding pass stamping at airports for international travellers from Sep 1

New Delhi, Aug 22, 2026: Passengers flying out of India will no longer be required to have their boarding passes stamped by immigration authorities from September 1, officials said on Saturday.

Under the new system, international passengers will be able to present an e-boarding pass on their smartphones for immigration clearance, according to officials.

The Bureau of Immigration (BoI), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued a directive to airport authorities to discontinue the mandatory physical stamping of boarding passes at immigration counters at all international airports.

Officials said the move was aimed at easing inconvenience to passengers and avoiding errors caused by improper or incorrect stamping of boarding passes.

“After examining the matter, the BoI has decided to do away with the mandatory requirement of physical boarding passes and the stamping of boarding passes at immigration counters at all international airports in the country,” officials said, quoting the directive.

However, passengers carrying physical boarding passes will continue to be allowed to use them for immigration clearance, though they will not be stamped from September 1.

Security officials said the CISF has not been stamping boarding passes during individual frisking of international passengers. Boarding passes are required to be produced only for immigration clearance. The CISF stopped stamping boarding passes for both domestic and international passengers several years ago.

Meanwhile, authorities are also planning to discontinue the stamping of immigration entry and exit details for Indian passport holders. The move is expected to be rolled out across Indian airports after the completion of a pilot project, officials said.
