He has replaced Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who died at the age of 73 on Friday.

Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ), the former president’s half-brother, has been the de facto ruler of the UAE for years now, particularly after Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014.

"We congratulate him and pledge allegiance to him as do our people...and the entire country will follow his leadership to glory," Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also UAE vice-president and premier, said in a Twitter post.

PM Modi took to Twitter to congratulate Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on being elected as the new President of UAE.

He wrote, "My best wishes to the Ruler of Abu Dhabi H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on being elected as the new President of the UAE. I am confident that under his dynamic and visionary leadership, our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to deepen."
