Doggy paddling took on a whole new meaning when surfing pooches took to the waves for a cute canine competition.

The Surf City Surf Dog tournament saw a record 2,500 fans descend on California’s Huntington Beach on Sunday to cheer on the 65 dogs taking part in the tournament.

The sixth annual event has been hailed as the most popular to date and raised more than $6,000 - £3,700 - for charity.

Organiser Lisa Scolman, 50, told the Orange County Register: "This is our largest event yet.

"It’s exciting to see where dog surfing is going and to see it growing and growing. Dogs can really, really surf."

The dogs were placed into categories based on weight and size, while both humans and their pets could together take part in another.

Thankfully all of the dogs wore life-jackets to protect them from the ruff weather.
