A Pizza Hut restaurant has sparked fury by offering free animals from a nearby pet shop as part of a bizarre and controversial meal deal promotion.

The fast food joint in Melbourne, Australia, erected a large sign, which read: "Buy any 10 large pizzas and get one small animal from Pets Story."

It also featured a picture of a super-cute hamster.

The poster prompted outrage on Twitter and Facebook, where angry animal-lovers were quick to brand the promotion "disgraceful" and "irresponsible".

Twitter user Elle Mitchell wrote: "don’t give away animals like toys as a promotion."

And Staffordshire Rescue suggested an alternative deal, adding: "Maybe a donation to a local animal rescue for every 10 pizzas bought might be better."

Eventually, the Mount Waverley eatery scrapped the offer and covered the the sign with white paper after pressure from Oscar’s Law, an animal rights organisation.

But the animal-loving community demanded the notice be removed completely.

The fast food chain has since released a statement conceding that the “thoughtless” and “inappropriate” promotion was not condoned by Pizza Hut Australia.

It was also quick to highlight that no animals had been given away.

The statement read: “It has come to our attention that one of our stores have recently been running a promotion which was not approved by Pizza Hut Australia, nor was condoned in any circumstances.

“We would like to sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended by this.

“The poster has since been taken down and all those involved have been made aware of the severity and inappropriateness of the promotion. "

It continued: "We would like to thank Oscar’s Law and all those who have brought this to our attention this evening.

“On behalf of Pizza Hut Australia we once again apologise for this thoughtless promotion ever occurring and would like to reassure you all that this matter is being seriously dealt with.”

However, some customers remain unhappy, with a handful vowing never to eat anything from Pizza Hut ever again and others calling for further action against the franchise.
