Cameron Platt, who recently graduated with a masters degree from Oxford University, announced she is engaged to Lee Clark Mitchell – who is a professor in English.

The couple – who have a 46-year age gap – met when Cameron took one of Lee’s classes as an undergraduate at Princeton University in the United States five years ago.

In a lengthy Facebook post she opened up about her romance with the lecturer – who will be 72 in June – acknowledging that “it might come as a surprise to many of you”.

“I was taking his lecture course on Henry James and William Faulkner,” she wrote.

“Lee was little more than a stranger to me then, but he captivated me with his brilliance, sensitivity, and passion.

“His lectures changed forever the way that I think.”

By the time Platt was graduating at the top of her class with a degree in English and a certificate in theatre, she said Mitchell, who turns 72 in June, had become her “devoted mentor”.

But after leaving Princeton, she moved to Oxford and during her years in the UK she said she often thought about the professor.

She added: “I was surprised to find how much I still thought of Lee - and soon I understood that I felt something for him that I’d not fully acknowledged before.

“At the end of my two years in Oxford, after much reflection, and with encouragement from my wonderful friends, I resolved to shoot my shot.”

Platt said the pair only started dating six months ago after praising his “brilliance, sensitivity, and passion”.

Platt, who is originally from Santa Barbara, California, kept their relationship “private” for the six months, but once they became engaged after about seven months of dates, she was ready to make the relationship public.

She acknowledged that the announcement “will come as a surprise to many”.

She also admitted the couple had concerns about their relationship, given their “different stages of life.”

But she wrote that she’s deeply in love with her former professor.

She added: “Eventually it became impossible to deny how fully we feel meant for each other, and neither of us has looked back since.
