John Michael D’Cunha - Judging Excellence

Mangalore Today News Network

Justice John Michael CunhaMangaluru, July 1, 2015: When John Michael D’Cunha was recently appointed as Registrar General of Karnataka High Court, it was indeed a matter of pride for Mangaluru. And of course, the city has every reason to cheer the appointment of this upright man who is known as the  judge who sent a sitting CM behind bars  for the first time in India in the Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case.

Cunha hails from Kaikamba in the outskirts of the city. He is from an agricultural family and is proud of it. He did his graduation in law from SDM Law College in Mangaluru and later ventured into MANU Advocates by joining hands with three other fellow lawyers.

After qualifying as a District Judge in 2002, he served as First Additional District and Sessions Judge in Hubballi; Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dharwad and Bangalore Rural  and as Registrar (Vigilance) at the Karnataka High Court.

Known to be a no-nonsense judge, Cunha always favoured early disposal of cases and never encouraged  adjournments of hearing unnecessarily. He is also known for his stern approach in dealing with the Jayalalithaa case which was considered politically volatile.
