Mangaluru, August 15, 2018: Mangaluru which has gifted talents  in diverse fields, has one more reason to be proud of. A researcher of city origin has been chosen by the French Academy of Sciences  for its prestigious award.

Harsha S. Bhat, a CNRS (The French National Centre for Scientific Research) researcher at the Ecole Normale Superieure Laboratory of Geology, will be bestowed with the Michel Gouilloud Schlumberger prize for 2018.  He has been chosen for the Award for his original work on the mechanics of earthquakes.

Son of Suresh Bhat Bakrabail, Dakshina Kannada district unit President of Komu Sauharda Vedike, Harsha Bhat is an alumnus of the National  Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, where he studied civil engineering.

A  solid mechanician and seismologist by training, Harsha after completing his PhD at Harvard University, did his post doctoral studies at Caltech and the University of Southern California. He joined the CNRS in 2012 as Senior Research Scientist. His most recent discovery is that some types of earthquake faults may also tend to open up, contrary to the traditional understanding that faults only slide past one another.

The Michel Gouilloud Schlumberger Prize which he has won  carries a purse of € 20,000 and a medal and will be awarded to him on November 20 this year.
