Mangalore, July 8, 2014: Saxophone is one musical instrument that has not attracted many women artistes. But Meghana Saligrama is in love with Saxophone. Her passion for music and Saxophone has helped her emerge as a successful Saxophonist and earned her laurels.

 

Hailing from  Saligrama in Udupi district, Meghana comes from a family of musicians. Her father Durgadas Udupi is a Dholak artiste, while her uncle Udupi Janardhan is a Saxophone artiste. A disciple of renowned saxophonist Alevoor Sunder Sheregar, Meghana  began learning Saxophone at the age of 8 and  mastered the art so soon that she was ready to give a stage show within just three months after starting learning.

Since then there was no  going back and she has presented programmes at various places and also in foreign nations. Awards came  her way and of late she has been nominated for the Aryabhata Award for the year 2013 given by the Aryabhata Cultural Association. She will receive the Award at a ceremony at Bangalore on June 22. She has won the  National and State Awards for music, Rajyotsava Award,   “Kala Sourabha” award of Andhra Pradesh Government and Gangubai Hanagal “Kala Kanmani” award. Meghana has also been bestowed with the titles “Naada Visharade” by Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt and “Kala Kusuma” by Uppinangady Sahasralingeshwara Temple.

She considers her Guru as her mentor and says the renowned Saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath and her uncle Udupi Janardhan as her role models. Meghana is not just a musician but also a sports talent who has taken part in several competitions during her school days.  She has also brought out four albums namely “Meghanada”, “Megha Lahari”, “Megha Varshini” and “Bhagyada Lakshmi Baaramma.”
