Mangaluru, Aug 08 2018: Mines and Geology Department and the police have seized 10 truckloads of sand illegally stocked on the banks of the Nethravati near Adyar Katte.

When a team, led by Deputy Director of Mines and Geology Department Sumitra, visited the spot,  the workers stopped extracting sand and moved their boats away. Then, the team seized the sand stocked in an open place on the riverbank.

According to sources, activists of a political party in the coalition government were allegedly involved in the illegal extraction of sand from the Coastal Regulatory Zone area. The district administration has banned extraction of sand in CRZ area on June 11. Workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were employed in the boats for extracting sand.

The Mines and Geology team will shortly file a complaint under Section 200 of Criminal Procedure Code before the jurisdictional magistrate and initiate proceedings against the perpetrators for violation of Section 22 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, an official said.

Reacting to the raid, Minister in-charge of the district U.T. Khader told media on august 7, Tuesday that action will be taken against those involved in illegal sand extraction. “The raid was carried out on my directions,” he said.

Minister Khader said that action will be taken against all offenders regardless of their political affiliation.
