Mangaluru, July 13 2018: Campco should give thrust on value-added products of arecanut. The Campco has the challenge of protecting the interest of arecanut growers, said Nalanda College Principal Dr Vigneshwara Varmudi.

Speaking at Campco Day celebrations at Campco head office in the city on Wednesday, he said, “All research on arecanut is unilateral in nature, which is dangerous. The Campco should take up a research to prove medicinal properties of arecanut and thus protect the interest of its growers.”

He said, “Wrong reports on the harmful effects of arecanut consumption has been placed before the court. Campco should publish research publications on the medicinal properties of arecanut.”

Stating that tobacco consumption is likely to be banned by 2020, he said the ban on tobacco will affect the arecanut growers. The cooperative society should make preparations to protect the arecanut growers. There is a need to give priority to sub crops and value-added arecanut products, he suggested.

Campco founder director L T Thimmappa said, “Arecanut growers had faced problems when the merchants refused to purchase arecanut in the past. To protect the interest of the growers, Campco came into existence. Campco founder Varanasi Subraya Bhat has to be credited for getting good price for cocoa, in India. There is a need to conduct research on arecanut.”

Report soon :  Campco President S R Sathishchandra said, “Union Minister for Health J P Nadda has promised to protect the interest of arecanut growers. Kasargod -based CPCRI has already initiated a research on medicinal properties of arecanut and the report will be submitted shortly.”

Further, he said Campco is mulling over setting up a coconut value-added production unit. The proposal has been approved by the Central government. Once the unit is set up, then the Campco will purchase coconut directly from the farmers.

Campco Vice President Shankaranarayana Bhat and MD Sathish Bhandary were present. Adike Pathrike Editor Shree Padre was felicitated.
