Garbage woes still to be resolved in city

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru: There is no end to the garbage woes beside National Highway 66, from Nanthoor to Talapady it seems.

The residents face inconvenience as several open spaces beside the road continue to rot and smell.

The garbage and construction debris continue to be dumped beside the roads at Ekkur, Jeppinamoragu, Adamkudru, Kumpala Bypass, Sankolige, Ucchila, and KC Road. Often this situation is seen in the bye lanes too.

The garbage is generated not by the residents but by those who visit the city and have become habituated to bringing their garbage in plastic bags and dumping the same by the roadside. According to the residents nearby, it is the people who travel in two-wheelers and cars bring the waste in a plastic carry bag, dump it on a few vacant sites before proceeding further.

In the absence of bins, residents dump the waste on roads as dogs and cattle squatter and also consume it.

Cleanliness drive  :  The Zilla Panchayat initiated a drive to clean the area near the roads in its jurisdiction. It also decided to then plant saplings there, to prevent the people from dumping garbage. The drive, however, has not yielded much results.

Even though the volunteers under Ramakrishna Mission’s cleanliness drive had cleared the garbage from some dumping spots beside the highway, the heaps continue to mount. Also, debris are dumped on the road near Jeppinamogaru.

“The foul odour emanating from the garbage has been causing inconvenience to the passersby. Many a times miscreants set fire to the garbage. The black smoke creates a problem for pedestrians and road users,” said auto drivers.

“Either bins should be placed or garbage should be cleared regularly,” said the residents.

Ill-effects  :  According to the NGOs who have been creating awareness on the ill-effects of haphazard dumping of waste, the ultimate solution is segregation at source.

It would seem quite obvious that unless the public cooperate with the local bodies, the garbage woes cannot be checked.
