’Climate Smart Village’ Alivekodi in Udupi selected

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru Research Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute demonstrated seaweed culture at Alivekodi village in Paduvari Grama Panchayat, Byndoor, under National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA).

NICRA is a network project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), under Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The project aims to enhance resilience of Indian agriculture to climate change and climate vulnerability through strategic research and technology demonstration in farmers’ field.

As part of the NICRA project, the ICAR- CMFRI, Mangaluru Research Centre, has conducted studies on the vulnerabilities of the coastal districts in Karnataka to climate change and climate variability. The study has indicated that Udupi district is more vulnerable to accelerated Sea Level Rise (SLR).


Alivekodi Village under Paduvari Grama panchayat in Udupi district is therefore selected and adopted to upgrade it to a ‘Climate Smart Village’ (CSV). The programme, through suitable interventions, aims to create awareness on alternate livelihood options, facilitate sustainable increase in agriculture and allied sectors such as fisheries, poultry, goat farming etc., to improve the socio economic status of the coastal population while building resilience to current climatic variability and future climate change.

The first meeting of CSV was held in Sri Rama Bhajana Mandira, Tharapathi, Alvaekodi village recently. The meeting provided a platform for interacting with experts in the field of agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and fisheries on different effective climate smart technologies, schemes and capacity building for climate change adaptation.

The programme was organised by the NICRA project team of Mangaluru RC, comprising Dr Dineshbabu A P, Principal Scientist, Dr Sujitha Thomas, Principal Scientist and Dr Rajesh K M, Senior Scientist, along with Dr Prathibha Rohit, Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge of Mangaluru Research Centre.

Hands on demonstration of seaweed culture was made by Dr P Kaladharan, Principal Scientist at ICAR-CMFRI, a national expert in Seaweed research and farming. He gave a briefing about the species that could be cultured along with different methods in seaweed farming. The meeting also helped in identifying and formation of Self Help Groups interested in various agriculture activities and interactions with experts in different sectors which is an important step towards making Alivekodi a climate smart village.
