Mangaluru, Jan 13, 2018: Addressing media, Chandrakanth Rao, NITK Surathkal Alumni Association informed that it has organised a half marathon along the NITK beach on January 14 Sunday at 6.45 am.  About 2,500 students and about 250 citizens are expected to participate in this year’s half marathon and other running events. It is expected to cost over Rs 10 lakh this year.

NITK Karavali Marathon will be thrown open to sponsorship from next year with options for a title sponsor and platinum, gold and silver sponsorship opportunities. NITK Alumni Association is the first Alumni Association to organise such a marathon among NITs, he added.

He said that through the NITK Karavali Marathon, the NITK Surathkal Alumni Association and NITK students are dedicated to promoting a healthier lifestyle for each and every person. With such a lifestyle, lethargy, obesity, diseases and other negative aspects can be fully eliminated.

NITK Surathkal Alumni Association has been working closely with the students of NITK in supporting many activities. “We have a Multi Skill Development Centre with 100 computers and a powerful server with an investment of over Rs 60 lakh. Greening the campus with 5000 fruit-bearing trees is an ongoing project with an outlay of around Rs 35 lakh. NITK SAA runs many other need-based initiatives on the campus such as soft loans, gym equipment, cycles etc.”

Based on a commitment from NITK Surathkal Alumni Association to support sports and running activities, students reserved second Saturday of every January as Sports day and the following Sunday as Marathon day for the last two years. The participation in the 2016 marathon was 1800, while it was 2,200 participants last year.
