Conference on virology by NITTE Uni, from today Dec 7.

Mangaluru:  Addressing media here on Dec 6, Wednesday, Nitte University Senior Director (International Relations) and Virocon Organising Committee Chairman Prof Iddya Karunasagar said that Indian Virological Society and Nitte University are set to open ‘Virocon 2017’, the 26th conference on Indian Virological Society at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte on December 7.

 He went on to say that Nitte University Chancellor N Vinay Hegde will be the chief guest. University of Glasgow, UK, International Commission of Viral Taxonomy Chairman Dr Andrew Davison and Nitte University Vice Chancellor Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary will be the guests of honour. Indian Virological Society president Prof Anupam Varma will preside over the inaugural session.

Prof Iddya Karunasagar said that the Indian Virological Society was established in 1984 for a better understanding and management of problems related to viruses in various fields such as agriculture, aquaculture, veterinary and human medicine.

Nitte University has been promoting interdisciplinary studies and research on viruses affecting the health of human beings and animals, including aquatic creatures. Therefore, the conference gains significance, he added.

Theme  :  Nitte University Director (Research and Development Prof Indrani Karunasagar said that the theme of the three-day conference is ‘Viruses to viromes in health and disease’. Experts from India and abroad will speak and present papers on related topics of virology. Around 250 delegates will attend.

Awards will be presented to senior virologists, young scientists and students for their significant works in the field, she added.  Indian Virological Society president Prof Anupam Varma and secretary Dr Govind P Rao were present during the press meet.
