Mangaluru, Oct 11,2017: The detailed project report (DPR) on upgrading and widening the Mulky-Kateel-Polali-B.C. Road and Melkar-Mudipu-Thokkottu Road stretches is expected to be ready within eight months, according to Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP. Speaking to reporters after launching a survey of the stretches at Mulky on Monday, he said STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd. would prepare the report for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which will take up the roadwork.

He said when upgraded, the 58-km stretch between Mulky and B.C. Road via Polali would be a bypass connecting the Goa-Kerala national highway with the Mangaluru-Bengaluru one. The 27-km stretch from Melkar to Thokkottu will be another bypass linking the two highways. This is expected to reduce traffic in the city. The stretches will be upgraded under the Bharat Mala Project of the Union government. The land losers will be compensated under the new land acquisition policy. Mr. Kateel said the Mangaluru-Karkala-Moodbidri stretch of the national highway would be upgraded and widened to 45 m.

The MP said the Centre has sanctioned Rs. 29 crore for dredging at Bengre opposite the Old Port under the Sagar Mala Project. Of that, Rs. 7.5 crore has been released.

In addition, the Centre has sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for building a berth at the Old Port for Lakshadweep-bound vessels. Of that, Rs. 12.5 crore has been released.
