Gang of five arrested in dacoity case

Mangaluru, Feb 21, 2017: The Bellare police have arrested a gang of five persons who allegedly robbed an arecanut merchant of Rs. 5 lakh at gunpoint in Aivarnadu last month.

The accused are Avinash Jagannath, 35, of Thane, Maharashtra, Abdul Karim, 24, and Mohammed Haneef, 33, of Puttur, Tahir Hussain, 36, of Yelahanka in Bengaluru, and Charan Singh, 24, of Madhya Pradesh. They are said to have waylaid the merchant, Abdul Khader, on January 21 when he was travelling in his car with three others to his shop in Guthigar. They robbed him of Rs. 5 lakh and three mobile phones.

In a press note, the police said Belagavi’s APMC Yard police had arrested the five accused in connection with another dacoity case and informed the Bellare police of their involvement in the January 21 incident. The police have recovered Rs. 2.9 lakh, three pistols, some live bullets and the two cars the gang used to escape from Aivarnadu. All five have been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
