Prisoner under trial tries to commit suicide

Mangalore, Mar 16: Bharatraj, a prisoner under trial, tried to commit suicide owing to alleged harrassment by Bajrang Dal activists in the Mangalore Jail. Barke police have registered a case regarding this. 

Bharatraj was arrested on charges of being involved in the murder of Manjunath alias Kadle Manja, a Bajrang Dal activist, on Car Street in Mangalore. 

Since the jail authorities were worried about the safety of Bharatraj in the Mangalore jail where most of the inmates were Bajrang Dal activists, they shifted Bharatraj to Belgaum jail; and from there he was again shifted to Bangalore jail. However, the authorities of the Bangalore jail said that producing him in the Mangalore court from the Bangalore jail will be very difficult. As a result of this, Bharatraj was brought back to the Mangalore jail. 

Previously, an inmate called Munna alias Shashikiran, who stood accused of killing two traders in Talapady, was attacked inside the jail. He was rushed to Wenlock Hospital with neck injuries. Communal hatred was found to the reason for this attack. The police shifted 8 suspected inmates to Bellary jail and the Barke police registered a case.
