Mangaluru, Jan 09, 2017: Particulay in this ’smart city’ Mangaluru the situation for those unfortunates who have to walk on the side of the roads, teaming with heavy traffic chaos with a phenomenal increase in all types of vehicles on our concrete roads here is a hazardous situation.

During the pendency of the four-laning project of National Highway 66 between Talapady and Kundapur, the NHAI added and deleted portions of service roads, pedestrian and cattle crossings at several places ostensibly due to local demand/opposition. As a result, not a single pedestrian/cattle crossing has been built all along the 90-km stretch thereby exposing human life to grave risk.  Neither are there road under bridges nor foot over bridges at busy junctions as well as towns en-route.

It surprising to find in the State capital of Bengaluru that many very important roads with heavy traffic are not concreted, while in Mangaluru even small roads are concreted without proper space for the common pedestrian.

In particular road crossing for the aged and children is a horrible matter. Foot paths are not proper or non-existant.Where foot paths are marked they are used for parking and other uses. Zebra crossings are not respected and improperly placed and rarely found. Indeed it is very uncivil that the pedestrians are in serious danger due to unsafe roads and only the car culture gets respect undue. the concerned must take steps to mitigate this horrible situation.
