Manipal, Apr 05, 2016: It is reported that students of MSc. Hospitality and Tourism, Department of Allied Hospitality Studies (DAHS), Manipal University, made more than 2,500 paper bags and envelopes and distributed it to the vendors in and around Manipal recently to create awareness on plastics banned.

A ban on plastic bags has created an alternative use and the students have reached out to the vendors and also taught them to make bags with paper, according to a press release. The students are spreading awareness through “Prakriti,” a community outreach programme under Student Empowerment for Environmental Development. The programme focuses on 3Rs — reduce, reuse and recycle.

The campaign not only brought out the creativity in students but also the responsibility of the vendors towards society. The vendors assured the students that they will start making their paper bags soon and also help in banning plastic.

The activity was supervised by P. Valsaraj, Professor and Coordinator DAHS along with students Ashish P., Abhishek Dev, Yashika Singh, Apurva Singh, Mugil V., Shalini Pallikila and Harshad Muthe, the release said.
